The Ride
When Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed Central Park, horseback riding was part of the intended way the landscape was to be seen. The park’s Bridle Path, which still winds through its quieter stretches, was created specifically for this purpose. Today’s rides follow those same paths, offering a peaceful way to move through the park that aligns with its original design.
Each ride is private and by appointment only, limited to two guests, and accompanied by a professional guide. The experience is designed to feel calm, considered, and unhurried—an understated way to experience Central Park from horseback.
Rides take place at a relaxed pace, depending on experience level and ability, but typically last around 90 minutes. Rides are priced at $350 per person. While we love hosting experienced riders, no prior riding experience is required. Our horses are carefully selected for their steadiness in an urban environment and are accustomed to traffic, crowds, and the many distractions in the park. Our team ensures they are well cared for and thoughtfully matched to this work.
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by our groom, who will assist you with tack adjustment and mounting, and your guide for the day, who will accompany you and give directions throughout the ride. Guides are equally comfortable sharing context about the park and its history or allowing the ride to unfold quietly, depending on your preference. The bridle paths pass through tree-lined stretches, open lawns, and some of the park’s most recognizable scenery, making for a naturally photogenic experience for those who wish to capture the moment.
Rides are best suited for adults and older children (12 and up) who are comfortable following basic instructions and enjoying a relaxed, outdoor experience. Availability is limited, and scheduling varies by season and conditions. All rides are confirmed in advance and operate at management's discretion to ensure the comfort and safety of both guests and horses.
Beyond the Park
Not all of our rides take place in the city. Miller's Horse Company also leads rides on state park land in the New York region, offering access to historic carriage roads, open trails, and quieter terrain that invites a different kind of riding experience. For those seeking something more active, we occasionally take groups out to hunter paces—a format that blends trail riding with light competition over varied terrain—and to organized hunts, all open to riders with some prior experience.
For advanced riders, we offer seasonal beach rides along the Connecticut shoreline. These rides are tide-dependent and limited in availability, but for those who qualify, they are among the most distinctive experiences we offer.
All rides outside the park are shared first with our exclusive email list. Group size, pace, and terrain vary by location. Pricing and availability are provided at the time of booking.
Care Comes First
Horseback riding in New York City is, by necessity, not an inexpensive undertaking. The care, space, staffing, and infrastructure required to maintain horses responsibly in an urban environment are substantial—and continue to rise each year.
Our pricing reflects the realities of maintaining the highest standards of horse welfare. This includes stabling outside of Manhattan, professional daily care, experienced staff, appropriate rest schedules, and well-maintained tack and equipment chosen for both horse comfort and rider safety. Every ride operates under these standards.
But we also believe that access to horses should not be determined solely by means. In recognition of the deep inequities that shape urban access to animals and open space, Miller’s Horse Co. sets aside a limited number of complimentary and community-focused rides each month.
These experiences are offered in partnership with individuals and organizations for whom cost would otherwise be a barrier. If you would like to ride with us but are experiencing financial hardship, we invite you to share your interest by sending a brief letter or postcard to Manhattan Saddlery, Attn: Miller’s Horse Co., 117 East 24th Street, New York, New York 10010.
